1Vardān entered Judea with Parthian horsemen years before any star sent priests west. The road carried armor, dynastic promises, and men certain that local grievances could be made useful to an empire beyond the Euphrates. 2Antigonus claimed the throne. Hyrcanus lost power and was carried east. Herod fled toward allies who could return him with Roman authority. Jerusalem learned again that kingship could arrive from outside wearing another empire’s protection. 3Nisa, a caravan master attached to the army, watched civilians hide grain from every side. “They cheer whichever king is farthest away,” she said. “The nearest one is the man collecting their sons.” 4A Magus traveling with the eastern court refused to bless the campaign as fulfillment of prophecy. “A horse does not become holy because a priest predicts where it will trample,” he told Vardān. 5Babylonian Judeans welcomed Hyrcanus with respect after his removal. Their communities had lived east of Judea for generations. The map between Persia, Babylonia, and Jerusalem had never become empty merely because later readers looked westward. 6The Parthians withdrew, but the memory remained. Herod would know that eastern power could recognize, install, or remove a Judean king. Rome gave him a crown; the East had already taught him how insecure crowns could be. 7Vardān returned to the Magian schools with reports of Judean expectation. Some teachers heard only politics. Others heard a people waiting for heaven to solve the damage created by kings. 8The School of the Eastern Sky added a warning beside its maps: Never confuse a sign of restoration with an invitation to choose another claimant for the throne. 9Years later, when Magi debated traveling to Judea, the oldest members remembered the horsemen. “Herod will not hear a religious question,” one said. “He will hear Parthia asking whether Rome chose the wrong king.” 10The road of the Magi would therefore carry danger before it carried gifts.
