Parthian forces occupied Palestine in 40–39 BCE, supported Antigonus against Herod and Hyrcanus II, and carried Hyrcanus into Babylonia. The episode remained part of the political memory surrounding Herod’s rule.
Fiction boundary
Vardān, Nisa, the Magian observers, and their private council are fictional. The Parthian intervention, Antigonus’s installation, Hyrcanus’s captivity, and Herod’s flight are historical.
