Persia, Greece, and Rome became beasts, numbers, and scheduled defeats rather than peoples whose witnesses might dispute the story. 3Rumors reached the school of healers touching those called unclean, teachers questioning rank, eastern words appearing in Judean speech, and crowds gathering around men who promised change. 4Saul understood how failed claimants could end. Rome punished villages for the dreams of a few. Suppression, he reasoned, might prevent a greater slaughter. 5His fear therefore wore the face of compassion. A teacher warned that mercy weakened the wall, and Saul repeated the sentence until force sounded like care performed at scale. 6He volunteered to identify teachings that threatened the inherited boundary.
