Herodotus places the Greek physician Democedes at Darius I’s court after he was sent to Susa as a captive. He reportedly healed Darius, treated Atossa, received extraordinary rewards, and still sought a way home.
Democedes, Darius, and Atossa are historical. Mehrasp, the Magian conversations, the patients, and the private moral debate are invented. Herodotus remains the principal narrative source and must be read critically.
