BEHIND THIS SCENE

What is history and what is fiction?

Sacred traditionTraditional religious material; historical dating and narrative form remain distinct.

Historical anchor

Avestan pairidaēza- and the related Old Persian *paridaida- refer to an enclosure or walled garden. The Iranian word later passed into Greek as paradeisos and ultimately into English as paradise.

Fiction boundary

Dena’s garden, its children, and all dialogue are fictional. The chapter turns the historical word into a recurring moral symbol.
